  • Current distribution known : restricted to Lake Tanganyika and associated drainages in Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. Also reported from the Lubalaye River (lower Lukuga tributary), Malagarazi River and Ruzizi River. Reports from lakes Victoria, Nakavali, Edward, George and Kivu and associated drainages are misidentifications .
  • Ecology : not a seasonal killifish .
  • Embryology/ontogeny : Wourms, 1969 .
  • Food habits : feeds on algae, fish scales, termites, chironomid larvae, prawns and copepods .
  • Habitat : found in rivers and river mouths, coastal swamps, estuaries and other shallow parts of Lake Tanganyika. Occurs in small groups near river banks; found in slow flowing and stagnant water of river mouths and deltas near lakes .

  • Reproduction : eggs have development time of 14 days in captivity; sexual maturity reached at age of 5 months | Roloff, 1975 d | Welcomme, 1967 a .

    • Haplochilus pumilus Boulenger, 1906 k: 554, pl. 32, fig. 4. Type locality: "Kitutu, Lake Tanganyika", southend of Lake Tanganyika, present Zambia. Syntypes BMNH n° 1906.9.8: 74-76 (3).
