  • Anatomy : Fermor, 1913 .
  • Current distribution known : from Bosluisbaai, Torra Bay and Swakopmund or Walvis Bay, northwest Namibia to Cape of Good Hope, Natal and Beira all in southern Africa. Records from Portuguese Guinea as Tachysurus feliceps (Frade, Bacelar & Gonçalvez, 1946: 368; Gonçalvez, 1955: 132) and from Guinea as Arius feliceps (Cadenat, 1947: 28) are erroneous. Published reports from Madagascar (Pellegrin, 1908 b, 1923 i, 1933 a, 1934 a; Kiener, 1961, 1963, 1966 a) are doubted .

  • Types :
    • Bagrus capensis A. Smith, 1849: pl. 8. Type locality: " South Africa ". Holotype BMNH n° 1857.6.13: 147.
    • Galeichthys feliceps Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1840: 29, pl. 424. Type locality: "Environs du Cap". Syntypes (mounted) MNHN n° A.9361 to 9365 (5).
    • Galeichthys ocellatus Gilchrist & Thompson, 1916 a: 60, fig. Type locality: " Zwartkops River, Algoa Bay ". Holotype PEM.
    • Tachysurus fossor (? non Pimelodes fossor (Pimelodes fossor Lichtenstein, 1823: 112. Type locality: " Prome " quals Cape of Good Hope. Holotype lost. Pimelodes fossor is undoubtedly based on a specimen of Galeichthys but the description is insufficient for identification with either of the two South African species and must be considered as a nomen dubium| Peters, 1868 d: 455 (synonymy with G. feliceps)).
